This is one you have to hear to believe. Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA), who has served as the congressman from Virginia’s 8th district since 1991, told a Roll Call reporter yesterday that “members of Congress are underpaid.”
The current annual salary for a member of Congress is $174,000, more than four times the median personal income of an average American. Moran went on to lament that members “can’t afford to live decently” on the money, which places them in the top 8 percent of all income earners.
In addition to the salary, federal representatives receive lavish perks and privileges, which include free air travel, 239 days off per year and a Cadillac retirement plan.
Keep in mind: Congress has an eight percent approval rating! That’s the worst of all-time. By calling for pay that doesn’t match performance, Moran is showing the country the same tone deafness that has plagued Washington for years.
Term limits for House and Senate members are long overdue. When enacted, they promise to replace out-of-touch incumbents like Moran with citizens legislators who understand what it really means to struggle and be underpaid.
