Statewide Poll Continues to Show Support for Term Limits High

(March 24, 2008) A statewide poll released today shows that at least 66 percent of Michiganders support the term limits provision adopted by Michigan voters in 1992, up 7 percent from the original 59 percent yes vote which imposed term limits on elected state officials.

These results come in sharp contrast to polling sponsored by Michigan chapter of the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) which claimed polling they contracted Marketing Resource Group to complete showed that Michiganders wanted an end to term limits.

NFIB has been working with several other special interest groups to advocate a repeal of Michigan’s term limits law.

Greg Schmid, Chairman and Founder of Don’t Touch Term Limits offered this thought on the polling disparity, “Michigan voters still do support term limits by an overwhelming margin. In fact, their poll buried the term limits issue deep within the part time legislature question so it wouldn’t get noticed. That is constant with their ‘Trojan horse’ strategy to gut term limits by using the popular part time legislature issue as a loss leader.”

The polling also showed that organized business groups, such as the NFIB, are viewed unfavorably by 45 percent of respondents, while only 21 percent have a favorable opinion of them. Additionally, 52 percent of respondents noted that they would be less likely to support a term limits repeal if they knew that a special interest was behind the repeal.

“Truth is in the numbers,” concluded Schmid. “The poll shows that the business organizations pushing to gut term limits have no credibility with the public. Instead of these association bureaucrats spending time and effort attacking term limits they should be looking to rebuild their standing with the public.”
